Fire Categories and Fire Extinguishers

Not all fires are the same. Different types of fires require the right type of fire extinguisher to be safely extinguished. Our fire experts will survey your business premises to identify products, processes, storage areas, and access points that may require specific fire extinguisher sets depending on potential fire categories:

  • Class A: Organic solids (e.g. paper, wood)
  • Class B: Flammable/combustible liquids (e.g. petrol, grease, oil)
  • Class C: Flammable gases
  • Class D: Burning metals
  • Class Electrical Fires: Caused by electrical equipment (symbol-based)
  • Class F: Fats (cooking fats and oils)

Which type of fire extinguisher do I need?

It’s essential to fight each class of fire with the correct extinguisher containing the appropriate extinguishing material. Each extinguisher is identified by a BS EN3 code, ensuring legal compliance and meeting British standards for portable fire extinguishers. London Electrical & Fire can advise you on, and supply, the right fire extinguishers for your premises.

Type BS EN 3 Colour Code Fire Class
Water Signal Red A
Water Mist White and Red A, F (also suitable for B, C, electrical - if tested for non-conductivity)
