There is a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 to protect workers from any risk to their health and safety.

Specifically, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems to be safe to use and tested regularly in compliance with BS 97671. It states that no electrical system can be regarded as ‘safe’ for use until a trained electrician has tested it.
